Why this morning, no, why this week has been so great…

It’s family camp. So we get waaaay more staff time. I’m rooming with other counseling girls - the beds are crazy comfortable - I have time for naps. The family I’m with is adorable - they have 5 kids (I’m loving being with another big family) and they are ALL brown eyed.

I’m with the youth during kids activity times and this morning we did a canoe trip. When I say canoe trip I mean we drove a lake (I got to drive the staff in a non-camp vehicle, despite being under 21 - we blasted tunage and rolled down all the windows), put the canoes in, paddled for a few minutes, and promptly began tipping everyone and swimming. The two counseling guys were in a super tippy canoe - it tipped when the wilderness leaders rammed them… KS then tried to tip me and AB, unsuccessful in the water, he climbed INTO our boat and got us tipped. The water was absolutely gorgeous though. I wanted to be tipped, I wanted to swim, I was so happy to BE IN A LAKE again. We tried to be good leaders and interact with the kids some more but they all tried hard to stay away from us because they were scared they would get tipped… So the leaders all just jumped back in and swam around together for the rest of the time we had. I don’t think my words are quite capturing how delightful and wonderful this was. I’m still feeling happy from the memories. Maybe if I ever put in the effort to contrast it with a day of regular grade camp.

Every time I’m out on that particular lake I feel SO Canadian. Evergreens all around the perimeter, paddling in a green canoe, glassy water, blue skies, strangers fishing from shore. I could take a picture and send it to Tourism Alberta - They would love me.

Alberta Summer Saturday

Mmmmm, can it get better than laying on the front lawn, with tumblr, a Timmy’s ice capp, and the distinct awareness that I’ll be burnt before the end of the afternoon if I don’t grab some sunscreen?

Glory glory, this is so chill.

And now I laugh at the irony there because this is probably the hottest day so far this summer. And I am blessed to have the freedom to enjoy it.

This past weekend I finally got up to my cabin with my family (and captured this gorgeous sunset canoe ride on my phone)!
I missed all last summer because I worked at a greenhouse (they never let you book weekends off…) and then I was out at camp all summer as a counselor. This year, what with full time MCAT studying, my schedule is far more flexible. Aaaaaand in August, one of my long weekends from camp happens to coincide with the August long weekend, which is when the town we’re near has their annual small town celebrations. So the boyfriend and I are already planning to visit.
Grand summer fun ahead :)
